Understanding Multimodality

This articles brings up many good points about modality. Living in a society that demands the use of technology, I think that multi modal composition is something that should be taught in all composition classes. We are surrounded by multi modal composition each day so why not learn how to be an effective producer of it and not just a consumer. Teaching this in classrooms will give students the benefit of learning what communication is like in the real world. Throughout a day we come in contact with so many different forms of communication like TV, email, cell phones, magazines, billboards, etc, that not teaching about these things in a class is limiting to students. While it is important to learn about how one can make an argument perhaps more clearly and effectively using media other than text, it is important that students don't get lost in technology. Students need to learn about the different media available for their use, but at the same time realize that they can't hide behind that media and loose their sense of self. It is difficult to be a productive member of society without interpersonal skills.
